Oinktoberfest 2009 is history. The people came and they ate BBQ, drank beer, listened to great bands, walked the festival grounds, talked to the teams, & watched the cannon shoot its pumpkins. A record 60 teams competed Saturday for the KCBS Competition & 32 for the Sunday contests. Friday's move-in was perfect weather for the arriving teams from across the Northeast, Canada, & as far away as Kansas & Virginia. The night was cold, the firepits were roaring, Billy McEwan & Barbara Sinclair were rockin', the beer was flowing and the teams were getting ready for their big day on Saturday. A beautiful sunrise was followed by a typical cool Fall day with a mix of clouds & sun until just before the Awards ceremony when the rain came forcing us indoors for the presentations. Saturdays KCBS contest Grand Champion team was Smoke on Wheels, who came the farthest, hailing from one of the BBQ capitals of the country, Kansas City, KS. Reserve Grand Champion was local restauranteur Ellis Leverette of Donnies Smokehouse, a four time Grand Champion of past Oinktoberfests. On Sunday, the Outdoor Cooking Contest was host to 32 teams competing in chicken wings, sausage, any pork except ribs, any side dish and dessert. Anything form of cooking was allowed, as long as it was done outdoors: grilling, smoking, frying, baking, steaming, braising... you get the idea. Grand Champion is the team with the highest point total for the first 4 categories. This year's winner for the second time was locally based team of Second Hand Smokers. Reserve Grand Champion was a new team, The 5th Artery, anchored by team members of another seasoned team from past years, Giggling Pigs. The Chili Cookoff had 21 competitors. Buffalo based Carnivore's Heaven won 1st place in chili and 2nd place went to another local team, Lady Luck. Oinktoberfest is one of the premiere events in Western New York and a part of Western New York's biggest family event, the Fall Festival at the Great Pumpkin Farm.
